We are proud to announce that our colleague Jan Kaufman gained a second place for the best student paper and oral presentation\u00a0at the 14th International Conference on Shot Peening (ICSP-14<\/a>), organized by\u00a0Politecnico di Milano<\/a>\u00a0(September 4 \u2013 7, 2022).<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Jan’s paper and presentation introduced a topic of Laser Shock Peening to enhance stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue resistance in marine aluminium alloys<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong>The paper showed the effects of Laser Shock Peening (LSP), an alternative to Shot Peening, on marine aluminium alloys. LSP generated compressive residual stresses which varied depending on the peening strategy and method of confinement. Electrochemical tests indicated a region of increased passivity samples without protective coating as well as significantly reduced intergranular corrosion rate. 3-point bend tests showed significant improvement in fatigue strength. Slow strain rate testing showed strong work hardening of treated specimens although the influence on IGSCC was not clearly indicated. The jury evaluated both the quality of the paper and of the oral presentation.<\/p>\n

ICSP<\/a> conference is held every three years and is one of the calendar\u2019s most important events on the science, technology and applications of mechanical surface treatments.<\/p>\n
