In the article, the authors Ond\u0159ej Slez\u00e1k, David Vojna, Jan Pila\u0159, Martin Divok\u00fd, Ond\u0159ej Denk, Martin Hanu\u0161, Petr Navr\u00e1til, Martin Smr\u017e, Antonio Lucianetti and Tom\u00e1\u0161 Mocek report on the first-ever demonstration of the optical isolation of a kilowatt average power large aperture high energy pulsed laser! The story behind this article is as follows.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hilase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/1-179.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The recent dynamic development in the field of high average power pulsed lasers started the hunt for various optical components and devices capable of functionality in such powerful laser beams. These lasers are aiming at the application areas spreading from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hilase.cz\/en\/products\/laser-micromachining-lmm\/\">advanced material processing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hilase.cz\/en\/products\/laser-shock-peening-lsp\/\">laser shock peening<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hilase.cz\/en\/products\/laser-induced-damaged-threshold-lidt\/\">laser induced damage threshold testing<\/a>. The usage of lasers for the applications always brings the risk of unwanted back reflections coming back from the experimental area to the power amplifier chain. <strong>These back-reflections may<\/strong> cause undesirable interferences, disturb the laser operation or, in the worst-case scenario, <strong>severely damage the optical components<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> <strong>Therefore, it is vitally important to protect the laser with a nonreciprocal device<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>the optical isolator<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i_TdtyCCnB0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A Faraday isolator (optical isolator based on the Faraday effect) capable of reliable protection of the laser amplifier chain delivering 100 J nanosecond laser pulses at the repetition rate of 10 Hz has been developed and successfully tested in the HiLASE Centre.
