An ambitious project by Czech high school students will use laser technology to tackle the problem of space debris in our orbit.<\/p>\n

“Although the universe is vast, there are so many broken and uncontrolled satellites circling over our heads that they sometimes collide. “At that moment they break up into hundreds or thousands of tiny particles that fly on at enormous speed. This can endanger other satellites, but also human crews,” warns the young researcher.”<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The LASAR<\/a> project has earned worldwide recognition: it has won a prestigious NASA<\/a> competition and this year a test device will already go into space with a SpaceX<\/a> rocket. The device is equipped with a target for an extremely precise laser beam. This will help repair a malfunctioning satellite or return it to our atmosphere, where it will burn up.<\/p>\n
