The treatment was applied underwater using a special laser head, in order to access the hard-to-reach inside of the narrow tube. The study describes a practical solution for treating hard-to-reach areas and is beneficial in the area of using LSP on heterogeneous welds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hilase.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mitigating-environmental-assisted-cracking-in-heterogeneous-welds-by-laser-peening-without-coating.png\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The treatment introduced compressive residual stresses <strong>up to a depth of 0.8 mm<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The lifetime of environmentally assisted cracking was <strong>extended 2.5x<\/strong>. There was also a reduction in secondary crack abundance and length.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The fatigue life of the part was extended more than 8x.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>HiLASIANS <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jan-kaufman-69869089\/\">Jan Kaufman<\/a><\/strong> (team leader of LSP), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jan-smaus\/\">Jan \u0160maus<\/a><\/strong> (LSP technologist),<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sunil-pathak-34a53814\/\">Sunil Pathak<\/a><\/strong> (LSP scientist), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/janbrajer\/\">Jan Brajer<\/a><\/strong> (head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hilase.cz\/en\/vyzkumne-programy\/industrial-laser-applications\/\">Industrial Laser Applications<\/a>) and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tomas-mocek-1ab6951a1\/\">Tom\u00e1\u0161 Mocek<\/a><\/strong> (head of the HiLASE Centre) collaborated with a team from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cvrez.cz\/\">\u0158e\u017e research centre<\/a><\/strong>: David Bric\u00edn, Zbyn\u011bk \u0160pirit, Josef Strejcius and Zden\u011bk Ful\u00edn.<\/p>\n<p><em>In this work Laser Peening without Coating (LPwC) was applied underwater on heterogeneous weld joint made of P265GH and X6CrNiTi18-10 steel tubes to prevent Environmental Assisted Cracking on the weld\/P265GH steel fusion boundary. Special laser head was designed to precisely deliver 200\u00a0mJ green laser beam on the centrally located weld interface on the inner surface of a pipe 76\u00a0mm wide and 420\u00a0mm long. Residual stress analysis revealed that the LPwC treatment led to generation of compressive residual stresses in the critical fusion boundary area with the magnitude of \u2212168\u00a0MPa despite the absence of a protective layer in the peening process. The depth of compressive stresses reached up to 0.8\u00a0mm. Plastic deformation induced by LPwC led to grain refinement in the microstructure and improved hardness by 16\u00a0%. Samples sectioned from the treated pipe were subjected to accelerated corrosion-mechanical testing which showed more than 2.5x increase in cycles to failure after LPwC.
