Laser Glass Processing Workshop at HiLASE: a day of micro-machining, structuring, and hands-on results PhotonHub

On 3 December 2025, the HiLASE Centre hosted the Laser Glass Processing Workshop, organized under the umbrella of PhotonHub Europe.

Throughout the day, participants explored modern approaches to laser micro-machining and surface structuring, including technique demonstrations, hands-on laboratory sessions, and discussions about the limitations of processing different types of glass.

The workshop was opened by Martina Řeháková, who welcomed the participants and introduced the day’s program. This was followed by presentations from Petr Hauschwitz and Juraj Sládek, who showcased current trends in laser micro-machining, precise glass processing, and surface structuring.

In the afternoon, the hands-on practical session took place in our experimental halls. Juraj Sládek demonstrated laser surface structuring of glass, building on real case studies presented earlier.
Kryštof Kobliha joined the session to demonstrate laser drilling of various shapes, explaining how different geometries influence material behavior.

Participants brought their own samples, which were used during the workshop for laser micro-machining – specifically surface structuring. The resulting structures and drilled geometries were then measured and evaluated using a laser confocal microscope.

“One of the samples we processed today during the practical session was a YAG crystal. We applied laser surface structuring with ultra-short 400 fs pulses at 515 nm.
The results showed that laser micro-processing is capable of competing with traditional chemical surface treatment.”
says Juraj Sládek.

Thank you to everyone for the great atmosphere, insightful questions, and genuine enthusiasm for laser technologies.

We look forward to seeing you again at future #HiLASE Laser Training Centre events!
